Boardroom Efficiency and Generative Governance

Efficiency in the boardroom is essential to optimizing board performance. It requires a clear, clear meeting structure and constant communication. It also requires a central platform that lets directors access their materials for meetings and discuss them online with colleagues in real-time. These goals aren’t easy to achieve, particularly for boards with a limited time, due to shorter director terms and constant recruitment.

In an OnBoard webinar Corporate advisors Max Franchitto and Tamara Barr discussed strategies for ensuring an optimum efficiency of the boardroom. They discussed how to increase engagement and encourage the diversity of skills and perspectives. They also discussed ways to improve the board process and improve the performance of individual directors.

Certain types of boardroom dynamics can be harmful for a board’s ability practice an generative approach to governance. A lack of critical thinking and a fervent desire to achieve consensus can lead to ineffective conversations and groupthink that can hinder the quality of decisions. In the same way, the tendency to dismiss an argument without having a full understanding of its underlying causes can cause mistrust and undermine a board’s effectiveness.

To avoid this kind of situation, it’s crucial for boards to maintain open communication and provide a platform that allows all directors to share their thoughts and ideas. Boards can do this by encouraging informal and constructive director communication between meetings, allowing opportunities for directors to find common interests outside of the boardroom, and also by incorporating “hang time” on agendas for meetings to allow new members to be introduced to their peers.
